About the Project
“SISTERHOOD: How Women Can Save the World” is a 90-minute documentary for PBS and global public television highlighting courageous communities of women and girls from six continents that are making positive, paradigm-shifting impacts toward seven UN Sustainable Development Goals. Fearless women who refuse to give up are forging a better world for us all. “SISTERHOOD” shows diverse communities of women and girls from six continents centering gender equality as critical to sustainable development. Through telescopic storytelling, we show women working to solve problems and achieve shared aims from a large, global scale to the granular, local level. This is an independent film, not funded/directed by those featured, ensuring objectivity.
“SISTERHOOD” shows friends working together, communities at the forefront of movements, to NGOs who tirelessly champion women/girls. “SISTERHOOD” narrows its focus to 7 (of 17) SDGs:
- SDG3: Good Health and Wellbeing (USA) – The Women’s Foundation of the South tackles structural racism and uplifts the well-being of Women of Color with WŌC@Rest®.
- SDG4, Quality Education (Poland): Vital Voices graduates pay it forward to girls through their heartwarming “I am a Leader” program.
- SDG8: Decent Work and Economic Growth (Indonesia) – Shinta Dhanuwardoyo and Cita Tenun Indonesia blend technology, fashion, and textiles to create jobs while preserving heritage.
- SDG10, Reduced Inequalities (Australia): Wiyi Yani U Thangani brings 900+ First Nations women into areas of decision-making and elevates their solutions for gender justice. We will document their empowering Summit hosted in partnership with/at Women Deliver, the largest conference on gender equality.
- SDG13, Climate Action (Brazil): Accompanying and documenting the Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network’s UN COP30 (climate) Indigenous delegation.
- SDG16, Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (Sierra Leone): Plan International “Girls Takeover” parliament (2022) Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Act (women won 30.4%, 41 parliament seats) and 2025 “Girls Takeover" transforms their country!
- SDG17, Partnership for the Goals (Global): Behind-the-scenes UN General Assembly with former female UN President, GWL Voices (76+ women presidents, ministers, ambassadors), and Plan International girls gather support for rotating male/female UN Presidents and 1st female Secretary-General.
Women’s relationships matter: they make us more resilient, determined, and empowered. By honoring women’s diversity, we generate solutions that can save our world. Throughout history, women have shown the world how to work together; women are naturally cooperative and imbue society with a greater concern for the wellbeing of everyone. Dramatic change happens when small acts accumulate and compound; a better world is forged by small, determined groups who refuse to give up.
Amidst war, pandemics, climate chaos, and political shifts, "SISTERHOOD" inspires new methods of working for sustainable change by showing timely stories that:
- Uphold human rights
- Encourage global citizenship
- Heal gaps in cultural understanding
- Expand social justice
- Challenge stereotypes and explore intersectionality
- Illuminate barriers for marginalized women/girls
- Illustrate actions that can ripple outward to create a more just and sustainable planet
“SISTERHOOD” showcases how women/girls are creating global, systemic paradigm shifts through their dedication to and passion for a more equitable world.
